Meeting Musings: Meet Samantha: An American Girl

We had our first meeting at the new time last Wednesday and I think it went very well.  We had a great discussion about the book and whether or not we liked it.  Chloe and her mother Andrea had already picked up a couple of other Samantha books to read.

One of the things we talked about was how different is would have been to live in 1904 with Samantha instead of now.  Children were to be "seen and not heard".  They didn't usually eat meals with their parents, instead, they ate in the nursery with a nanny or governess.  The girls had to wear dresses all the time and weren't supposed to climb trees or run.

We discussed why Eddie was so mean.  It might have been because he was jealous that Samantha and Nellie were such good friends.  I think he wanted to be friends, but didn't know how.  Have you ever met someone like that?  It's better to treat everyone nicely, because you don't know why they act the way they do.  Sometimes when you're nice to people who aren't very nice to you, they can become one of your best friends.

What about when Samantha gave her new doll to Nellie?  We talked about how hard it would be to give up something you loved to make someone else happy.  It would be hard, but I think it would be worth it.  You get such good feeling when you make others happy.

We also introduced the next book for our book club.  It is Where the Sidewalk Ends.  It's a collection of poems from one of my favorite poets, Shel Silvertein.  His work is absolutely hilarious and I think you're going to love it.  I hope to see all of you at our next meeting where we will be writing our own poetry and decorating valentines.

Until next time,
Miss Gloria
